Exploring in Costa Rica & Car Rentals

If you like to Explore like I do- you will definitely want to rent a car- and if you really want to Explore- you will want to rent a 4- wheel drive.  If you have never been to CR or you have never been out exploring while you are there- you should be aware that many of the roads are rough, gravel and can have steep inclines.  We rented a VRBO in the Mountains and there is no way a small vehicle would have made it up to our place.

The average elevation of mountains in Costa Rica varies depending on the region, but most of the country's mountain ranges have peaks between 1,500 and 3,800 meters (4,900 to 12,500 feet) above sea level.

There are several Car Rental Agencies in Costa Rica- I have read good and bad for just about everyone of them- so I think it depends on your own personal experience.

To rent a car in Costa Rica, you’ll generally need the following:

1. Valid Driver’s License

  • A valid driver’s license from your home country is required.

  • If your license is not in English or Spanish, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended.

2. Minimum Age Requirement

  • Most car rental companies require renters to be at least 21 years old.

  • Some companies may have a higher minimum age (23-25) or charge an underage driver fee for renters under 25.

3. Passport & Entry Stamp

  • A valid passport with proof of legal entry into Costa Rica (your entry stamp) may be required.

4. Credit Card for Deposit

  • A major credit card (Visa, Mastercard, or American Express) is needed for the security deposit.

  • The deposit varies by company but typically ranges from $500 to $2,500 depending on the car type and insurance.

  • Some companies accept debit cards, but a higher deposit may be required.

5. Mandatory Insurance

  • Third-Party Liability Insurance (TPL) is mandatory by law in Costa Rica.

  • Rental companies offer additional Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Full Coverage Insurance, but you may decline them if your credit card provides coverage (proof may be required).

Steps to Use Your Credit Card Insurance

✔ Call your credit card company before your trip to confirm coverage.
✔ Get written proof (email or document) of your coverage to show the rental agency.
✔ Decline the rental company’s CDW/LDW (but accept TPL).
✔ Be ready for a high deposit hold on your card.

6. Rental Agreement

  • You’ll need to sign a rental contract, which outlines the terms, policies, and insurance coverage
